Project Details

Name of Project: Hiawatha Light Rail
Location: Minneapolis, MN
Scope of Work: Sewer & Water Line Installation & Protection

The $715.3 million Hiawatha Light Rail was the first Commuter Rail line in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Designed to alleviate the growing freeway congestion in the Twin Cities area, the first run - completed in 2004, is 12 miles long and connects from downtown Minneapolis, to the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport.

In January 2001 Meyer Contracting, a Native American women owned small business, broke ground on the long anticipated Hiawatha Light Rail Project. Meyer Contracting removed and replaced all water main crossings that were in the path of the proposed light rail. This included setting up bypass water main, and removing and replacing existing line – some of which was over a century old. The project also entailed complete concrete encasement, isolation couplers and all related cathodic protection.

Effective coordination and scheduling was absolutely critical, as Meyer Contracting had to close down some of Minneapolis’s busiest intersections. Special attention in the downtown zone was required as Excel Energy’s Hub was located in the construct
ion zone. Crews had to work around thousands of underground wires.
