For Immediate Release:
Local
Contractor named Chairperson to
National USDOT Subcommittee
Minneapolis
– October 29, 2007 -
Kathy Meyer, President of Meyer
Contracting Inc., has been named
committee chairwoman to the
National Transportation and
Infrastructure Subcommittee. Ms.
Meyer is representing the
National Association of Minority
Contractors (NAMC) as it
partners with the Association of
General Contractors to develop a
tool kit to help other
Disadvantaged Business
Enterprises (DBE) participate in
federally funded transportation
projects.
The
National Transportation and
Infrastructure Subcommittee was
formed as a result of the first
annual Civil Rights
Transportation Summit, held June
2007 in Charlotte, NC. At this
conference, the NAMC held a
series of round table
discussions regarding small
business and minority
participation on federally
funded transportation projects.
As a result of the discussions,
the AGC agreed to work closer
with the members of the NAMC on
issues impacting small business
and minority contractors in the
construction industry.
The
NAMC appointed Kathy Meyer to be
chairwoman of the designated
committee based on the
“exemplary performance and track
record (of Meyer Contracting) as
a federally certified DBE
company”. Started in 1984, Meyer
Contracting is the only Native
American Female owned heavy
construction contractor in the
State of Minnesota. Based out of
Minneapolis, the company has
completed projects on the
Hiawatha Light Rail, Guthrie
Theater, Midtown Exchange,
Loring Greenway and Heritage
Park. It also has strong
relationships with the City of
Minneapolis, the City of St.
Paul and many state
organizations. The company has
recently been awarded work on
the 35W bridge reconstruction.
The
National Association of Minority
Contractors (NAMC) is an
organization dedicated to
developing minority owned
contractors. Established in
1969, there are now 25
nationwide chapters. The
organization has experienced
tremendous growth in the last
few years. Currently, Kathy
Meyer serves on the Executive
Boards at both a local and a
national level. A role that most
recently included helping
minority owned contractors in
the Louisiana area gain equal
access to work in rebuilding the
hurricane ravished flood zone.
The
committee will meet with various
government officials, several
times a year in Washington, DC.
It is also working alongside the
Federal Highway Administration (FHWA),
Federal Aviation Administration
(FAA), and the Federal Transit
Administration (FTA) to ensure
nationwide impacts are made to
the DBE program.
