Location: Odessa, MN
Scope of
Work: Earthwork and
Site Restoration
As part of the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife
Organization, the
Big Stone National
Wildlife Refuge is
one of the last tall
grass prairie areas
not only in the
state of Minnesota,
but in the country.
The refuge seeks to
“maintain and
restore native
prairie grassland
habitat, while
providing optimum
nesting cover for
waterfowl and other
grassland nesting
birds”.
Meyer
Contracting has
worked with the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife
Services on many
projects over the
years. The most
recent, in 2007,
involved raising an
existing road and
trail to create a
natural marsh at the
Big Stone National
Wildlife Refuge
located in Odessa, a
town in west-central
Minnesota.
Meyer Contracting
was asked to create
a natural marsh
wetland on the
upstream side of
County Road 1. This
spillway would allow
the refuge the
ability to maintain
a certain water
level for various
waterfowl. Site
development
included: earthwork,
cable concrete
installation, riprap
placement and site
restoration.
